Leverages Existing Infrastructure
Your company has invested time and money into your existing information system, so your wireless solution should work with the infrastructure you already have.
BlackBerry Enterprise Server is a Windows® NT service and utilizes the Microsoft Exchange information store to consolidate all email and messages and configuration details in the users' central mailboxes. It provides an out-of-the box wireless extension of your existing Microsoft Exchange messaging platform.
The BlackBerry Enterprise Solution also allows organizations to leverage their existing PBX, WiFi® and BlackBerry investments to provide on-premises and facility-based workers with wireless access to email, data and desktop phone functionality. Find out more about BlackBerry over WLAN.
The BlackBerry Enterprise Solution is a standards-based, open platform that works with existing data stores and applications through the Mobile Data Service (MDS) feature of BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
Manages End-to-End Connectivity
BlackBerry Enterprise Server communicates with BlackBerry devices and/or BlackBerry enabled devices over the wireless network(s) through a secure Internet connection from behind the firewall. It manages data transmission and encryption, and automatically delivers important information to mobile professionals using BlackBerry "push" delivery architecture.
Advanced Security
BlackBerry Enterprise Server provides advanced security features to meet strict enterprise requirements for information integrity and confidentiality:
•BlackBerry Enterprise Server requires an outbound-only initiated and authenticated connection through port 3101. Data remains encrypted at all points between the BlackBerry device and the BlackBerry Enterprise Server with end-to-end Triple DES or AES encryption.
•Data on the device, including messages, address book entries, calendar entries, memos and tasks, can be encrypted locally, so sensitive enterprise information is protected.
•IT administrators can define and enforce organization/workgroup wide security policies such as mandatory passwords and password configuration. They can also impose device lock-down or wipe data from lost or stolen devices.
•Optional S/MIME support leverages an organization’s existing S/MIME capabilities.
Multi-Network, Application and Device Support
One BlackBerry Enterprise Server supports multiple devices, applications and networks globally.
•Supports all BlackBerry devices, regardless of network technology or service provider.
•Can support a variety of other mobile devices and OSs from participating manufacturers. BlackBerry Connect and BlackBerry Built-in technology is supported by HTC, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, Siemens, Sony Ericsson, as well as Microsoft Windows Mobile, Palm OS, and Symbian OS.
•Integrates with the Microsoft Exchange messaging platform, as well as enterprise application servers to wirelessly enable email, CRM, ERP, business intelligence, document management systems and more.
•Supports all major wireless wide area networks globally: CDMA2000® 1xRTT, DataTAC®, GSM™/GPRS, iDEN™ (Nextel®/Mike™), and Mobitex®, as well as wireless local area networks (WLANs).
Quick and Cost-effective Deployments
Device deployment organization-wide is easier than ever with BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
•Wireless, cradle-less activation and provisioning** allows users to securely self-provision, directly from their BlackBerry device. Deployments can be streamlined and administrative overhead reduced.
•The Handheld Configuration Tool provides centralized device management and configuration, allowing IT administrators to load device software and user data for multiple users simultaneously from a central location.
•The Application Loader provides device software upgrades to user computers from a central location.
Easy to Manage
Get simplified management and centralized control of your wireless environment.
•IT administrators can track and manage key device statistics, including device model, PIN, software version and serial number, as well as monitor third party applications loaded and IT policies applied.
•IT administrators can specify which applications are required, allowed and prohibited on users' devices; required applications are pushed to the device and installed wirelessly.
•Customizable corporate-wide and workgroup-specific policies, allow IT administrators to enforce device software upgrades, make passwords mandatory, define automatic device backups and more.
•IT administrators have the ability to send wireless commands to enable or disable BlackBerry device functionality.
•Independent software processes monitor the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and many of its components. If a monitored operation fails, these processes will automatically detect faults and restart the appropriate functions.
•BlackBerry Enterprise Server is a scalable platform, growing along with organizations and easily accommodating new users and applications.
Highly Extensible
The Mobile Data Service feature of BlackBerry Enterprise Server works with existing corporate data stores and enterprise applications, such as field service and sales force automation, field data collection, business intelligence and document management systems, allowing organizations to easily extend this information wirelessly.
•Enables always-on/push-based, secure access to applications and information beyond email.
•Leverages the trusted end-to-end security model, delivery mechanism, push architecture and management/administrative features of BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
•Provides development tools to accelerate the creation of richer, more dynamic applications.

Completely Wireless User Experience
BlackBerry users can enjoy a similar email and data experience while on the go as they do when at their desk.
•With BlackBerry "push" technology, information finds the user - fast. Since BlackBerry devices are designed to remain continuously connected to the wireless network, users don't have to initiate data exchange and download.
•Two-way wireless synchronization of email and organizer information, allows users to enjoy complete wireless synchronization of read/unread status, sent items and filing of messages.
•Users can remotely control settings directly from their device, including wirelessly setting and managing their out-of-office auto-reply, changing email filters and updating their auto-signature.
•Sent items are synchronized between the user's BlackBerry device and their computer. Messages sent from their desktop email client can also be sent to their device as a Sent Item.
Productivity Enhancements and Ease-of-use for End Users
BlackBerry Enterprise Server helps mobile professionals stay productive throughout their day:
•Wireless email reconciliation - Message status (including read, unread, deletes and folder moves) is updated wirelessly.
•Remote Address Lookup - Users can search and interact with the Global Address List (GAL) remotely.
•Integrated Attachment Viewing - Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Adobe PDF, WordPerfect & ASCII files can all be natively viewed on the BlackBerry device. Images are also supported, e.g. JPG, BMP, GIF, PNG and TIFF, with image manipulation tools such as pan, zoom and rotate.

•Global Search - Users can simultaneously search the address book, calendar, memopad, tasks and messages applications.
•On-device help - Application specific support information is available on the device.
Note: Some features require a minimum version of BlackBerry device, desktop or server software.
